Climate We’re proud to have recently announced our commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across our entire carbon footprint by 2040—a U.S. wireless industry first. This target has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) using their Net-Zero Standard and includes near-term and long-term commitments to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 55 percent by 2030 and 90 percent by 2040, from a 2020 base year. Since we know we can’t go it alone, we also signed onto The Climate Pledge, a cross-sector community of companies and organizations working together to solve the challenges of cutting global carbon emissions for a sustainable future.
Sustainable energy management Our approach to sustainable energy management includes investing in energy efficiency measures to conserve energy where possible and investing in renewable energy projects to account for the electricity we purchase.
As our customers’ data consumption continues to grow, our aim is to power our network more efficiently and avoid a corresponding increase in our energy consumption. To track this, we’ve set a bold goal of reducing our energy consumption by 95 percent per petabyte of data traffic by 2030 from a 2019 baseline.
We’re committed to minimizing the environmental impact from any energy we do use. In early 2018, we went ALL IN by joining RE100, a global corporate renewable energy initiative, and setting out to source ALL of our electricity from renewable energy sources by 2021—another U.S. wireless first. We achieved this goal on schedule in 2021, and again in 2022 and remain committed to maintaining this position while exploring new renewable energy projects to further diversify our portfolio.
Value chain We are taking responsibility for our full carbon footprint by engaging stakeholders across our value chain to identify emissions hotspots and implement sustainability initiatives. We encourage our suppliers to set their own science-based emissions reduction targets, and we track supplier performance through regular assessments managed by EcoVadis.
Minimizing waste We are committed to diverting as much waste from landfills as possible through recycling, composting, avoidance, and digitization across the business. For end-of-life treatment of devices, we enable responsible device recycling for customers through our Device Reuse and Recycling Program.
